100MW! Tesla Signs Energy Storage Contract Worth $100M with Contact Energy

PVTIME – New Zealand power provider Contact Energy and EV giant Tesla are partnering to build a massive 100MW energy storage plant at Glenbrook in South Auckland.

The project, which will use Tesla’s Megapack 2 XL battery units, is estimated to cost up to NZD 163 million (US$99.4 million) and is expected to be commercially operational by March 2026, with the new battery facility providing enough electricity to power 44,000 homes for more than two hours during peak winter demand. Tesla will provide commissioning and long-term maintenance services for the battery.

“The battery will supply power to the grid in an instant, quickly getting electricity to where it is most needed in the country.  It will also support the development of new renewables like wind and solar generation,” Contact CEO Mike Fuge said. “Contact has made a commitment for its generation to be net zero by 2035, and further reduce New Zealand’s remaining reliance on fossil fuel electricity generation.”
