PVTIME – QatarEnergy, the Qatari state-owned petroleum giant, has recently announced plans to develop solar power projects with a total capacity of 2GW in the Dukhan area, approximately 80km west of Doha.
The new 2GW facility will more than double Qatar’s installed PV capacity by 2030, increasing its PV solar capacity to approximately 4GW. It is expected that solar power will provide about 30% of the country’s electricity by that time. Furthermore, the new Dukhan Solar Power Plant will be integrated into QatarEnergy’s existing solar portfolio, which includes the Al-Kharsaah plant, inaugurated in 2022 with an 800 MW capacity, and two additional projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, set to produce 875 MW by year-end.
“In line with our Sustainability Strategy, we will more than double our solar power production capacity to about 4,000MW by 2030 through the world-scale, 2,000MW Dukhan Solar Power Plant,” said Qatar’s Energy Minister Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, also president and CEO of QatarEnergy. “developing solar power plants is one of Qatar’s most crucial initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, develop sustainability projects, and diversify electricity production, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 4.7 million tons per annum.”
