PVTIME – In a major international energy deal, Shanghai Electric has signed a significant cooperation agreement with Masdar Clean Energy of Abu Dhabi. The two parties will work together on the 2GW Saydawi photovoltaic project in Saudi Arabia.

The Saydawi PV project, an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s fifth round National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP), is by far the largest photovoltaic EPC project Shanghai Electric has undertaken. Located in the east of Saudi Arabia, it covers an area of around 40 square kilometres, roughly the size of 5,700 standard football pitches.
Once operational, this colossal project will supply more than 6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to the region each year, enough to power more than 700,000 homes. It will also reduce carbon emissions by 3 million tonnes, making a significant contribution to the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s energy structure and the realisation of its ‘Vision 2030’.
Masdar, a leading energy developer in the Middle East, specialises in clean energy projects such as solar, wind and energy storage. It has a vast global footprint, having developed projects in over 40 countries across six continents, with a cumulative installed capacity of 51GW. By 2030, Masdar plans to develop and own more than 100GW of new energy projects worldwide. This partnership between Shanghai Electric and Masdar for the Saydawi project is set to be a game changer in the global renewable energy landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.
