PVTIME – On 3 November 2023, LONGi, the PV giant, reported a new world record for conversion efficiency of 33.9% on self-developed silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells. This breakthrough has been verified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
The current conversion efficiency for perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar cells is the highest to date, showing a remarkable improvement compared to LONGi’s previous results on the same type of cell. LONGi achieved a conversion efficiency of 33.5% at Intersolar Europe 2023 on 4 June 2023, and announced 31.5% at SNEC 2023 on 24 May 2023. The last world record was set by researchers at the Photovoltaics Laboratory (KPV-Lab) of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a leading research institution in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on 30 May 2023 that a perovskite silicon solar cell has achieved a power conversion efficiency of 33.7%, a result confirmed by the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI).
As the foremost solar technology enterprise globally, LONGi’s R&D team takes great pride in setting a new record of 33.9%, exceeding the Shockley-Quayser (S-Q) limit of 33.7% for crystalline silicon single-junction cells, with significant and valuable data. These findings are indicative of the efficiency benefit of silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells over crystalline silicon single-junction cells.
Currently, LONGi holds the world record for the highest conversion efficiency of both silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells and crystalline silicon single-junction cells as it set a world record for conversion efficiency of 26.81% on silicon heterojunction solar cells in November 2022.
“Enhancing cell conversion efficiency and decreasing the electricity cost continue to be the constant driving force for the progression of the photovoltaic sector,” states Li Zhenguo, President of LONGi. As the primary cell technology dominating more than 90% of the market share, the conversion efficiency of crystalline silicon single-junction cells is incessantly advancing, approaching its theoretical efficiency limit of 29.4%. With a theoretical efficiency limit of up to 43%, silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells are acknowledged as the mainstream technological solution for surpassing the efficiency limit of monocrystalline silicon cells. Furthermore, perovskite tandem cell technology is considered one of the most promising technologies for the next generation of high-efficiency solar cells, generating more power in the same area while absorbing the same amount of sunlight.
LONGi aims to contribute to the growth of the international PV industry through investment, technical cooperation and other means. This will showcase the capabilities and willingness of Chinese high-end manufacturing enterprises to engage in global partnerships to a broader range of nations.
