480MW! Chile’s Largest Solar Plant In Operation

PVTIME – The CEME1 solar project, with an installed capacity of 480 MW, has recently become operational in the Atacama Desert in Chile. It is currently the largest solar power plant in Chile by capacity.

The solar plant was commissioned by Generadora Metropolitana, which is owned by French utility EDF and Chilean independent power producer (IPP) AME. POWERCHINA Huadong Engineering Corporation was the contractor. The solar panels were supplied by Chinese module manufacturer JA Solar. Around 882,000 solar panels were installed, and cleaning robots were also used, reducing water consumption by 80-90% compared to other neighbouring projects.

When fully completed and commissioned, the project is expected to generate around 1 billion kWh of electricity per year, providing clean energy for 400,000 homes and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 280,000 tonnes per year.

“EDF is proud to contribute to Chile’s energy transition with this landmark solar plant which is a key asset of the hybrid thermal and renewable platform we are developing in the country,” said Beatrice Buffon, EDF Group Senior Executive Vice-President in charge of the International Division and Chairman of EDF Renewables. “The inauguration of CEME 1 is a milestone not only for Chile, but also for EDF due to its size and the innovations implemented in its construction. With this project we strengthen the Group’s position in Chile as we continue our path towards a carbon-neutral and sustainable future.”
