50MW! CIGS Solar Module Factory to Be Built by Polish Roltec

PVTIME – Polish copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) thin-film solar manufacturer Roltec is building a new factory in Jerzmanów, Wroclaw, Poland, the first manufacturing project using CIGS technology in Poland. According to Roltec, the plant will have a total investment of 250 million Polish zlotys (approximately $60 million) and an annual capacity of 50MW, and will be operational by the end of 2025.

Roltec announced the production project back in 2022 and originally planned to complete it by the end of 2023. However, construction of the plant did not officially begin until the end of 2024, and it is expected to be commercially operational by the end of 2025.

According to an official statement, the plant will enable large-scale production of CIGS modules based on technology developed in Roltec’s laboratories and pilot lines, and Roltec claims that its frameless CIGS modules generate 15% more electricity than silicon-based modules (on a per-kilowatt installed basis).

The Polish Ministry of Development and Technology will provide Roltec with a grant of PLN 3 million, to be paid in three instalments between 2024 and 2026.Roltec is one of the beneficiaries of a €1.2 billion state aid programme approved by the European Commission in September 2024 to support the production of renewable energy equipment, including photovoltaic modules.
