PVTIME – Desert Technologies (dt), an independent solar and smart infrastructure holding company focused on manufacturing and sustainable investment, recently announced plans to establish a 5GW solar module manufacturing base in the third industrial zone in Jeddah on the west coast of Saudi Arabia, with a total investment of SAR 750 million (approximately US$200 million or €1,834 million).
The Jeddah-based manufacturer has agreed to develop the facilities in partnership with Modon, the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technological Zones. Modon will provide 170,000 square metres of land and production lines for solar cells and modules with a capacity of 3GW and 2GW per year respectively.
Desert Technologies said last week that the solar modules produced at the plant would meet growing local demand for solar solutions and strengthen Saudi Arabia’s position in global non-oil export markets. The initiative is the latest in a series of projects announced in recent months aimed at localising manufacturing technologies to support Saudi Arabia’s green energy expansion. The projects include the construction of manufacturing facilities for solar panels, wind turbines and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
