Hanwha Qcells Closes 3.5GW Solar Module Facility in South Korea

PVTIME – Hanwha Qcells, a subsidiary of Hanwha Group, has recently declared its intention to shutter a 3.5GW solar module factory situated in Eumseong, South Korea, as a measure to improve its PV module production capacity.

This move is a response to the prevailing sluggishness in the domestic solar market in Korea. The overall solar capacity in Korea has been consistently decreasing for the last three years, dropping from 4.7 GW in 2020 to 3.4 GW in 2022. Hanwha Qcells predicts another decline in 2023.

The shutdown of Eumseong will have minimal impact on Qcells’ global module supply because of the substantial expansion of its production abilities. The present production capacity can cover our worldwide markets adequately. Additionally, its foremost manufacturing plant in Jincheon, South Korea, will keep receiving investments, continue producing TOPCon products and running a perovskite tandem pilot line. Workers from the Eumseong plant have the option to transfer to Jincheon if they wish to retain their position at Qcells, and additional manpower will boost TOPCon and tandem line operations.
