PV Power Plant Operational on the Highest Plateau in Xizang China

PVTIME – Recently, a PV power plant located on a plateau at an altitude of 4994m – 5100m, the highest PV power plant in the world, has been put into operation in Xizang, China.

Initiated by China Huadian Corporation Ltd (CHD), one of China’s wholly-owned national power producers, this special solar power generation project is located in one of the four sun-rich areas with a year-round temperature of 2.5℃, perfect for photovoltaic power generation, and is currently the world’s highest photostatic project.

At the same time, the project is researching and applying techniques to protect and restore alpine meadow vegetation to minimise disturbance to the fragile ecosystem of the plateau.

The total installed capacity of the project is 50 MW with 40 MWh of energy storage, providing clean electricity for approximately 4,000 households per day during sunny hours. Once operational, the project will generate 90 million kWh of clean electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 92,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to planting 3.3 million trees on the Xizang Plateau.
