NorSun to Supply Wafers to Heliene’s New 1GW Cell Plant

PVTIME – NorSun, a leading US producer of monocrystalline silicon ingots and wafers for the global solar energy industry, has announced a partnership with Heliene, a US manufacturer of solar modules. Heliene will purchase silicon wafers from NorSun.

The two parties have signed a multi-year agreement to supply Heliene with silicon wafers from NorSun’s planned 5GW wafer factory in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The new facility was announced in June 2024 and NorSun plans to invest $620 million in the production of silicon ingots and wafers. The wafers will be supplied to Heliene’s planned 1GW solar cell manufacturing facility in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota, which is being developed through a joint venture with Indian solar cell manufacturer Premier Energie. The supply will cover Heliene’s annual silicon wafer requirements from 2026.

Heliene has been manufacturing solar modules in Ontario, Canada, since 2010 and in Mountain Iron, Minnesota, since 2018. Last year, the company announced an additional $10 million investment to expand manufacturing and assembly lines at its Minnesota facility. NorSun has been manufacturing silicon wafers in Norway since 2007. The two companies share a commitment to building a sustainable, low-carbon solar supply chain in the US and providing customers with high-quality, reliable, American-made products. Both companies are proud of the new partnership and look forward to shaping the future of the US solar manufacturing landscape together.
