PVTIME – Juniper Green Energy, an Indian independent power producer (IPP), has joined forces with First Solar, the US’s top solar module manufacturer, to get 1GW of thin film PV modules over the next two years.
This is one of the biggest deals for locally produced modules in India. First Solar is supplying its Series 7 FT1 cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin film PV modules to Juniper’s projects in the Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra on the west coast. The modules will be supplied from First Solar’s manufacturing plant in Chennai, India, where it opened a 3.3GW facility earlier in 2024.
By getting modules from American manufacturer First Solar, Juniper Green Energy will reduce its reliance on China’s controversial supply chains and supply of crystalline silicon. The modules will be made to measure for India’s ground-mounted solar market. The companies say the benefits will include ALMM enlistment, DCR eligibility, and BIS compliance, and they’ll help lower India’s levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) for projects.
