PVTIME – Norway-based polysilicon supplier REC Silicon recently announced that it will cease silicon production at its Moses Lake, Washington, US site following the closure of its Montana, US polysilicon production facility in early 2024. REC Silicon now has no active polysilicon operations in the US.

REC Silicon stated that it will then focus its business on silicon gases. REC Silicon said that while polysilicon production will cease at the Moses Lake facility, the silicon gas production equipment will be maintained in a safe and reusable mode, with minimal interim costs and the ability to restart the unit with reasonable notice. This will allow REC Silicon to capitalise on future customer demand for silicon anodes or other gases in the energy storage space.
REC Silicon stated that it is currently discussing contract cancellations with its customers, including the waiver of any penalties and the deferral of the repayment of initial prepayments. customers can no longer wait for product deliveries to meet their needs as production at the ingot and wafer facility in Georgia has not yet commenced. REC Silicon claimed that its best option was to cease production altogether as it had few customers in the US and limited customers outside China. The closure of the Moses Lake facility will begin immediately and may take up to three months, with a corresponding reduction in the plant’s workforce.
