PVTIME – On 6 February 2025, Japan’s Sharp Electronics announced its decision to exit the European photovoltaic market on 31 March 2025 due to challenging market conditions. The company will be closing Sharp Energy Solutions (SESE), which has been in business in the European market for nearly 30 years.

SESE’s main activities included the development, execution and supply of solar energy projects in Europe, offering residential, commercial and industrial solar energy solutions. The company was established in the 1990s and played a significant role in Sharp’s early expansion into the renewable energy sector. Sharp Electronics has stated that it will continue to provide customer service from 1 April 2025 onwards. All product and power output warranties will remain in effect for the warranty period and will be managed and supported by Sharp Electronics GmbH. In addition, the close of business will not affect Sharp’s other operations in Europe or its global solar business. Notwithstanding SESE’s impending cessation of operations, all of its ongoing projects, orders and demand for solar modules and related products will continue to be handled appropriately until then.
Sharp attributes the divestment decision to the challenging conditions in the European solar market, which has become increasingly competitive in recent years, with numerous local and international companies entering the market and dividing up market share. At the same time, policy instability, raw material price fluctuations and other factors have also brought enormous cost pressures and business risks.
