4.8GW! INOX GFL to Build Major Solar Factory in India

PVTIME – In a significant development for India’s solar energy landscape, INOX GFL, a prominent Indian diversified conglomerate, has secured a major milestone. The Government of Odisha has allotted 78 acres of land in Dhenkanal district to INOX GFL for the construction of a solar cell and module factory.

The project, which has been officially given the green light by the state’s High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA), comes with a hefty price tag of 40 billion Indian rupees (around £410 million). This substantial investment will be used to build a factory with an annual production capacity of 4.8 GW.

This initiative is a major boost to the national strategies of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, played a key role in facilitating the land allocation process. Once operational, the factory will be one of the largest solar manufacturing units in eastern India.

The INOX Group has already made significant strides in the solar sector. With an investment of over 80 billion Indian rupees to date, it is on a mission to create integrated manufacturing capabilities for solar cells, modules and energy storage systems. The company aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 10GW by 2027.

In a broader context, India’s solar manufacturing sector is burgeoning. According to the ‘List of Approved Models and Manufacturers’ published in February 2025, the country’s domestic manufacturing capacity for photovoltaic modules is around 67GW, with solar cell capacity at around 25GW. The Indian government, keen to encourage this growth, has introduced the ‘Production – Linked Incentive Scheme for High – Efficiency Solar PV Modules’, which has earmarked a budget of INR 240 billion to promote large-scale domestic manufacturing of high efficiency solar PV modules.
