€10 Million! Dutch PV Firm MCPV Secures Funding from Spain for Gigafactory

PVTIME – MCPV, a Dutch photovoltaic company and member of the European Solar Manufacturing Council, has scored a big win. It’s just been awarded €10 million by the Spanish government to build a huge 2.5GW solar module factory in Tudela, Navarra. The funding is part of Spain’s €300 million Clean Energy Transition Fund, announced in March.

Marc Rechter, CEO of MCPV, hailed the deal as a key step in the revival of the European PV industry. The company plans to use heterojunction (HJT) technology to create a world-class, low-cost manufacturing facility to boost Europe’s energy independence and technological edge.

Founded in 2020 by PV pioneer Professor Eicke Weber, MCPV aims to ramp up gigawatt-scale production in Europe through greenfield projects. Focusing on HJT with ultra-thin silicon wafers, it aims for 15GW of capacity by 2026 and a 40% share of the European market by 2030.

This isn’t MCPV’s first government-backed success. In 2023, it received €4.2m from the Dutch National Growth Fund for a 4GW HJT cell factory in Veendam. This and the new Spanish factory, with a combined investment of over €500 million, will be operational by 2029.

HJT’s outstanding characteristics – high efficiency, low temperature effect, high bifacial power and PID resistance – make it the technology of choice for MCPV. Weber predicts it could reach 30% conversion efficiency by 2030, giving Europe a big advantage in the PV race.
