30.1%! LONGi Sets World Record for Commercial M6 Si-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cell Conversion Efficiency

PVTIME – On 19 June, 2024, PV giant LONGi announced a new world record conversion efficiency of 30.1% for its commercial M6 size silicon perovskite tandem solar cell at Intersolar Europe 2024 in Munich, Germany. The new breakthrough was independently certified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy (Fraunhofer ISE), an authoritative certification institution in Germany.

At the SNEC EXPO 2024 last week, LONGi achieved a new world record for conversion efficiency on its tandem solar cell, reaching 34.6% in Shanghai, China. This represents an absolute efficiency advantage of 1.5% over the company’s previous record of 28.6% on wafer-level tandem solar cell efficiency on M4 commercial-size wafers, set in May 2023.

Dr He Bo, R&D Director of LONGi Central R&D Institute, commented at the launch ceremony: “While continuously exploring the efficiency limits of tandem solar cells, LONGi’s R&D team started researching the mass production technology of tandem solar cells in October 2023, and in just six months, they overcame two key challenges: the preparation of large-area perovskite films in air and ultra-low temperature metallization.

The theoretical peak efficiency of monocrystalline silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells is up to 43%. These cells are the next generation of ultra-high efficiency solar cells, following on from the success of monocrystalline silicon back-contact (BC) cells. They represent an emerging photovoltaic technology that is currently being actively researched by the global photovoltaic industry. The creation of this “Dual-Champion” world record for tandem solar cells not only redefines the efficiency limit of two-terminal tandem cells but also represents a significant step towards the industrialisation of tandem solar cells. This achievement will assist LONGi in maintaining its leading position in both the mainstream monocrystalline silicon single-junction solar cells and tandem solar cells markets.

LONGi is proud of its R&D team and is confident that it will continue to make further achievements and innovations in solar technology. The Central R&D Institute, LONGi’s principal research facility, is home to a large and active research team comprising over 5,000 members. Notably, the team dedicated to advancing crystal silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells technology, which has consistently shattered global efficiency records, has an average age of just 28 years, according to Dr. He Bo.
